Asylum

Protection for Those Fleeing Persecution

The United States offers asylum as a form of protection to individuals who have been persecuted or fear persecution in their home countries. For many, applying for asylum is not just a legal process — it is a matter of survival. At the Connecticut Immigrant Center (CIMMC), we are committed to guiding asylum seekers through this complex process with compassion, professionalism, and affordable legal support.

Understanding Asylum

Asylum protects people who cannot safely return to their home country because of past persecution or a well-founded fear of future persecution based on:

  • Race

  • Religion

  • Nationality

  • Political opinion

  • Membership in a particular social group

If granted asylum, you may live and work in the U.S., apply for a green card after one year, and eventually pursue U.S. citizenship. Asylum also allows you to petition for qualifying family members to join you in the United States.

How We Help

Applying for asylum is often complicated and time-sensitive. Our legal team provides step-by-step guidance and strong representation at every stage of the process:

Eligibility Review

We evaluate your circumstances to determine whether you qualify for asylum or related protections such as withholding of removal or relief under the Convention Against Torture (CAT).

Application Assistance

We prepare and file the necessary forms (such as Form I-589), ensuring accuracy and completeness to avoid delays or denials.

Evidence & Documentation

We help you gather and organize evidence to support your claim, including personal statements, witness testimony, country condition reports, and medical or psychological evaluations when needed.

Representation in Interviews & Court

Our attorneys represent you at asylum interviews with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and in hearings before the immigration court if your case is referred.

Why Legal Representation Matters

Asylum cases are among the most complex areas of immigration law. The burden of proof rests on the applicant, and even strong cases can be denied without proper legal guidance. Strict deadlines — such as the one-year filing requirement — make it critical to act quickly and correctly.

With CIMMC on your side, you will have a dedicated legal team who will:

  • Build the strongest possible case for protection

  • Ensure deadlines and requirements are met

  • Present compelling evidence and legal arguments

  • Advocate passionately for your safety and future

Our Commitment

As a nonprofit law firm, CIMMC believes that everyone fleeing persecution deserves access to competent and affordable legal representation. We treat every asylum case with dignity, care, and urgency because we understand that lives and families are at stake.
